"DIDN'T KNOW THEY COULD DANCE"

My art, which reflects African American art traditions, is inspired by nature and the intricate relationship between man and nature. One of my earliest influences as a child growing up on a farm in Southeastern Arkansas was the Rhythm and Blues music of the Sixties. Lacking a voice for singing, I expressed my thoughts visually instead of vocally. When I closely observe my environment, I see rhythms in nature—such as repetitions, designs, and patterns—and recognize that dance is an essential part of the human experience, much like the works found in William Buchanan art.

Abstract painting of trees with bold black branches and vibrant yellow and blue background.
