William Buchanan received his Bachelor of Arts in Fine Arts from LeMoyne Owen College in Memphis, Tennessee. In addition to his studies at Jackson State University in Jackson, Mississippi, he studied painting, drawing, and design at the Peninsula School of Arts in Door County, Wisconsin (University of Wisconsin at Green Bay Ext.).
